A fire sprinkler system is a system that helps to reduce the impact of a fire outbreak in a large building. Large buildings like schools, companies, offices, and houses make use of fire sprinkler systems.
It is a system that is triggered by changes in temperature and releases water to the area of fire outbreak. Fire sprinkler systems are capable of controlling and extinguishing fire completely.
How Legal is Fire Sprinkler Systems?
As a result of the effectiveness of the fire sprinkler system in controlling fire outbreak. Many bodies have requested that it should be made a legal requirement for some environments.
In the year 2019, the Fire Industry Association (FIA) in the UK made a report. The fire sprinkler system became part of Government guidance on safe school design. However, it is not mandated in England, but it is in Wales and Scotland.
Also, both the Fire Brigade Union and National Education Union have both shown their concern. They jointly requested that the regulation be made mandatory in England. This request is because only 15% of schools in England have a fire sprinkler system.
Likewise, the London Fire Brigade has also requested that all purpose-built buildings should install the system. Buildings including homes, flats, and buildings with vulnerable people are also demanded to have fire sprinklers. Furthermore, the LFB has been able to orient contractors that fire sprinkler systems are safety measures, not luxury.
Statutory Guidance Changes
There was an amendment made by the UK government to the statutory guidance in May 2020. It was stated that all blocks of flats with a top floor of 11m above the ground level should install a fire sprinkler system.
Also, all new buildings that fall into the 11m categorisation must install the fire sprinklers system. The amendment came to effect from the 26th of November 2020.
However, buildings with vulnerable people have not been called to implement the protection system. As a result, the UK government has promised to review the amendment at a later date.
Designed With Future In View
As a result of continuous calls to ensure all buildings implement the fire sprinklers system. It is therefore a good idea to normalise the installation of the system in all buildings. Every building including churches, schools, and homes should install the system to possible standards.
It is, therefore, advisable to seek the expertise of a member of the British Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association (BAFSA) for the best installation of fire sprinklers system. This expertise offers you the ability to receive the best of services both in installation and maintenance.
